Fort Point National Historic Site

Located under the south anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge, this four-tiered brick and granite fortress is the only one of its kind west of the Mississippi River. It was built between 1853 and 1861 and accommodated 126 cannons and 500 soldiers. Wednesday-Sunday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

An elegant Queen Anne Victorian built in 1886 delights visitors with one-hour, docent-led tours of its large, formal rooms and many original furnishings. Ballroom features books and postcards for sale. Tours Wednesday Noon - 3:00 PM, Sunday 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Two-hour Pacific Heights walking tour offered Sundays at 12:30 PM. Admission to museum $5, $3 seniors and under age 12; walking tour $5, $3 seniors and under age 12.

 

Mission Dolores

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Mission Dolores is San Francisco's first registered landmark and the oldest intact building in The City. Dating from 1782, it houses paintings and artifacts from California's mission period. Audio tour available. 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM daily         

 

National Steinbeck Center

Dedicated to the life and works of John Steinbeck, the museum features a journey through seven themed galleries of multisensory, interactive exhibits, plus ever-changing art and cultural exhibits. An experience to be enjoyed thoroughly by people of all ages. Located in the heart of old-town Salinas, a 20-minute drive from Monterey. Open 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM daily.           

           

Presidio Museum

Built as a hospital in the 1860s, the museum focuses on the role of the military in the history and development of San Francisco from 1776 to the present. Two restored "earthquake cottages" have been moved to the grounds. Open 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Wednesday-Sunday, closed Monday-Tuesday.

 

USS Pampanito World War II Submarine
